Let’s Play Dress Up!

Thanks so much to everyone who commented over the weekend wishing me a fast recovery to this SUCKY cold. You all are so amazingly kind. I’m STILL like Uncle Joe… moving kind of slow… but getting better and heading back into the studio for another day of fun and games.

I hope to have my new movie finished by the end of the week. Keep checking. Just a couple of more shots to shoot!

NOW ON TO TODAY’S POST…

Last Guy spent all of last week at a business meeting in Indianapolis. At some point during his first day of meetings, he called me at home. He excitedly told me that in the convention center across from his hotel, they were holding the largest Star Wars Convention EVER. This was THE convention. Endorsed by George Lucas himself. Over 30,000 people attended from as far away as Japan! And the best part for LG was that his hotel lobby was SWARMING with grown men and a few women dressed in FULL STAR WARS GARB!

One thing about the Star Wars films is that there really isn’t much for a woman to do. I mean, face it. As far as I recall, the only good part in all the films for a woman was Princess Leia, and how many girls can you see running around at the convention with braids plastered to the sides of their heads. (According to LG, there were quite a few of these Leia chicks running around. Go figure!)

LG even got to see Kenny Baker strolling around the lobby. Kenny was the original tiny actor to play R2D2. (He was actually replaced by a computer in the later films…and I only know this because I Googled him!)

So this got me thinking about the whole phenomenon of mostly grown men who are so obsessed by a FRIGGIN’ MOVIE that they would travel miles to be surrounded by other people who are just as psyched to hang out with other Star Wars fanatics.

Here are some the scheduled “events” from last week’s convention. FOR REAL. I’M NOT MAKING THIS UP! And I’m sure that most of you will be BLUBBERING out loud because you missed it…

DROID BUILDING 101. Sure you can see all those great droids in the R2-D2 Builders’ room, but don’t you want to build one yourself? Here’s how to get started. (YIPPEE! Let me at ‘em!)

BUILDING STAR WARS PROPS AT HOME. After you’ve learned how to get started building a droid you can stay at the Star Wars Fan Stage and hear from Dean Plantamura and Scott Will of the 501st and Rebel Legions how to build your own first-class props. (And THEY should know! I would love to have a few Ewoks hanging out in my apartment.)

BOUNTY HUNTER COSTUMING. Learn how to get that coveted Mandalorian look from the experts of the 501st Legion in the Star Wars Fan Stage in Wabash 3. (Personally, I’m TOTALLY BUMMED that I never will know how to get that fabulous Mandalorian look that is so popular on fashion runways this season!)

STORMTROOPER OLYMPICS. Where else in the galaxy can you watch stormtroopers tossing Ewoks? (And where else would you WANT TO?)

REBELS VS. IMPERIALS! Come watch them square off live on the Saga Stage!

Like we don’t have enough violence in this world without going to a convention to see GROWN ADULTS dressed up playing at war. I DON’T GET IT!

I actually dated a guy many years ago that participated in Civil War reenactments… ON THE LOSING SIDE! I personally would want to play on the winning team if I was going to all that trouble!

CIVIL WAR, RENAISSANCE, & VICTORIAN REENACTMENTS. There are all kinds of ways to play dress up!

I was at dinner the night LG got home from Indianapolis, & Brit Boy joined us. We were talking about this whole reenactment phenomenon, and here’s what they had to say:

LAST GUY: In a way, I respect these people because they are passionate about something.

BRIT BOY: GET A LIFE.

So I’m putting this out to you all. On a scale of 1 to 10… 1 being GET A LIFE and 10 being TOTAL RESPECT for these people…What do YOU think about people who do reenactments?
